East Greenland paddles

Thanks to Liz in Cumbria, I now offer East Greenland paddles!

She commissioned me to carve her a Western Red Cedar shoulder-less East Greenland paddle with African

Blackwood tips. Despite the simpler shape when

compared to a West Greenland paddle, it was

a challenge to make it a slender, graceful yet

practical paddle.

It inspired me to make another to try myself.

Instead of African Blackwood I opted to

use American Ash on the tips and

extended this about 230mm (9") down

the blade edges for protection against

damage. Originally the Inuit paddles

had whale bone tips and edges to

reinforce against ice damage.

In the future I will experiment

with extending the Ash

edging further along the

blade edge but need to

avoid adding too

much to the overall

paddle weight.
